Who We Are

Deaf Girls Rescue (DGR) is a registered Community Based Organisation (CBO) for Deaf girls in Wakiso district in Uganda. It targets deaf girls aged 18 years and below and closely works with their households.

HOW WE STARTED
The organization was founded in 2015 by Ms. Rehema Namarome who has a hearing loss, after witnessing rampant rights violations against deaf girls at the grassroots and with hardly any support to redress the violations.

OUR VISION
A society where deaf girls are free from abuse.

OUR MISSION
To advocate for key societal changes that will eliminate rights abuse against deaf girls by building coalitions, provision of public education, direct support to survivors, and promotion of research and policy advocacy.

WHERE WE WORK
We are currently working in Wakiso district with plans to gradually extend to other districts of Uganda.

DGR Chairperson

She is the chairperson and a graduate of social work and development. She has vast experience working with various groups of vulnerable people in the mainstream. This includes slum dwellers, vulnerable women among others. She has also provided support in kind for women with disabilities groups in the course of her work.

Nandutu Zaina:
DGR Treasurer

She is a treasurer for DGR. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and has elevant experience working as a Accountant. She is also experienced in establishment and running small income generation activities. She voluntary supports DGR in organizing its financial records.

Bonnie Busingye
DGR Board of Trustees

She represents deaf women on DGR Board of Trustees. She has over 20 years’ experience in working with and for deaf women in Uganda. She is an instructor at Kyambogo University and also a Sign Language Instructor working with Uganda National Association of the Deaf (UNAD). She holds a BA Degree in Social Work and Administration and a Master or Arts in….

Wabule Deborah

She is a young deaf woman who represents deaf girls on the Board of Trustees. She is qualified in knitting (sweaters, clothes, among other things). She also has basic skills in tailoring

Sarah Nabatanzi
guardian (grandmother)

She is a guardian (grandmother) to a deaf girl. She is so caring and tried her best to enroll her in school. Though she dropped out due to circumstances beyond her control, she is good at Uganda Sign Language communication skills and has got some literacy skills.

Rehema Namarome
Founder of the Deaf Girls Rescue

She is the Founder of the Deaf Girls Rescue and the Chief Executive Officer. She holds a BA (Hons) Degree in Education and a Master of Arts in Human Rights. She has over 18 years advocating for rights of persons with disabilities in Uganda. She particularly focuses on deaf women like herself and deaf children, especially the girls. She is also a fellow of the Community Solutions Program (International Research and Exchanges Board implemented by the USA government).
