Schünemann and F.L. Hoerth. He made his debut in 1929 at the Düsseldorf Opera House as the title hero in “Schwanda the Bagpiper” by Weinberger. 1930-31 he was engaged at the Cologne Opera House, 1932-33 at the Theater of Königsberg (East Prussia), 1932 he was appointed to the Staatsoper of Dresden, whose member he remained for more than 35 years until 1969; since 1968 he was honorary member of the house. He sang at the Dresdner Oper in the world premieres of two Richard Strauss operas: on July 1, 1933 in »Arabella«, on October 15, 1938 in »Daphne«. He also appeared in Dresden in the world premieres of the operas »Massimila Doni« by Othmar Schoeck (1937) and »The landlady of Pinsk« by Richard Mohaupt (1938). In 1935 he performed in Paris, in 1937 at the Vienna State Opera, in 1938 at the Rome Opera, in 1941 at the Royal Opera in Stockholm and at the Maggio Musicale in Florence. Other guest appearances took place in Amsterdam in 1931, at the Antwerp Opera in 1939, in Oslo, at the Teatro San Carlos Lisbon and in 1951 at the Helsinki Opera House. In 1936 he performed with the ensemble of the Dresdner Oper at the Covent Garden Opera London, performing as Masetto in “Don Giovanni”, as Melot in “Tristan” and in the Richard Strauss opera “Ariadne auf Naxos”. In 1950 he received a professorship at the Musikhochschule Berlin, but continued to act as a singer. So he still participated in 1953 at the Salzburg Festival. Married to the opera singer Renate Behrens (1912-81), who worked as an opera and operetta soubrette at the Centraltheater Dresden (1934-35), at the Landestheater Detmold (1937-38), at the Theater of Schweidnitz (1938-30), at the Theater of Aussig (Ustí nad Labem, 1940-41) and was again engaged in 1941-43 at the Dresden Centraltheater.
