MicroLubrol® OMNIFLON™ XDL™ has a 2 to 3 micron average particle size (APS) with a significant percentage of particles at the sub-micron level. A smaller particle size range means more effective dry lubrication action. The presence of a significant number of sub-micron particles assures more complete and uniform coating of even the smallest imperfection areas in the lubricated surface to insure maximum coverage and lubricity. Image #1 shows an unlubricated polished stainless surface. Image #2 shows how what appears to be a smooth polished stainless steel surface, when viewed under magnification, is actually rough and full of imperfections. In image #3 you can appreciate how effectively and how smoothly MicroLubrol OMNIFLON™ XDL™ coats a stainless steel surface just by simply brushing the powder lightly on the surface. There is a smaller average particle size grade (0.2 micron, 200 nanometers) which we also sell, our OMNIFLON™ XLA™ Lubricant Additive grade, which adds extreme pressure (EP) performance to greases and oils and provides improved functional performance to other materials such as paints, inks, plastics, etc., but we believe that the particle size of the OMNIFLON™ XDL™ grade offers the best performance for dry lubrication applications on virtually all hard and soft surfaces. Don’t take your lumps! Due to the very nature of the polytetrafluoroethylene polymer material and the manufacturing process, very small particles of PTFE tend to agglomerate resulting in lumpy and sometimes even hard-packed powder material being sold by many suppliers. This does not necessarily reduce its performance, but can make applying the material difficult and messy and make it not spread uniformly or stay on the surface as well, and may cause product waste and unevenness during application. Other PTFE powders are processed, handled, packaged and sold for general industrial use which means they might be packed tightly and be lumpy and not easy to separate. MicroLubrol® OMNIFLON™ XDL™ consists of 100% virgin PTFE material and is specifically formulated for optimal performance as a dry lubricant powder. OMNIFLON™ XDL™ is a free-flowing light powder that offers superior ready-to-use dry lubrication performance. OMNIFLON™ XDL™ is “fluffier” and therefore looser and more free-flowing than PTFE material from other suppliers. The “fluffiness” of OMNIFLON™ XDL™ comes from the natural tendency of sub-micron sized PTFE particles to cling to each other and form agglomerates of many very small particles, as seen in image #4, which spread out easily when brushed or spread (image #5 is included with a micro-scale to serve as a magnification size guide). Not all PTFE powders are created equal! PTFE or polytetrafluoroethylene, as its name implies, has a polymeric, or chainlike, molecular structure. As with most polymers, the length of the PTFE molecular chain has a significant influence in determining the characteristics of the finished polymer product. In general, the longer and more ordered the polymer molecular chain, the greater the molecular weight, the crystallinity and the hardness of the PTFE material, and the shorter the polymer molecular chain the lower the molecular weight and lower the hardness. A lot of the PTFE that is used in industrial applications to manufacture equipment parts is high density PTFE material that is more crystalline and therefore harder, which makes it easier to machine and grind to the desired shape. For lubrication performance, however, it is best to use lower density PTFE which provides softer, more lubricious particles. Some PTFE powders sold by others originate from recycled PTFE which is less epensive than 100% virgin material. Recycled PTFE can look identical to virgin PTFE to the naked eye, but at the molecular level, it can be very different. When PTFE is recycled, the molecular density of the product is not controlled like it is when the PTFE originates from factory fresh virgin material. MicroLubrol® OMNIFLON™ XDL™ contains only 100% pure virgin PTFE with the correct low molecular weight for superior dry lubrication performance. It does NOT contain recycled, lower purity mixed density PTFE.
