Catalinbread SFT Bass Effects Pedal The Catalinbread SFT is an overdrive pedal that recreates the Ampeg tones that made history, from “Get Ya” to “Desert Sound”. The Ampeg tone has always been right around the corner. Historically, the early Ampegs were made for jazz purists. As such, its origins lie in a different style than popular genres such as country and rock, which are dominated by Fender and Marshall.Looking at Ampeg amplifiers from a design perspective, it is clear that there are more elements of the hi-fi world than the guitarist. This is demonstrated by the way the tubes are treated, the gain stage without cathode capacitors, and the implementation of the Baxandall tone control. And Ampeg did not stop innovating. The “flip-top” combo is a perfect example. Not to mention the existence of amplifiers that could adjust the tightness of the speaker baffle with a torsion bar.The most important of Ampeg’s innovations is its approach to musical genres. The company reversed its previous jazz purism by 180°. The occasion was the Stones’ American tour in 1969. At that time, we built eight prototype SVT amplifiers and one backup to support the Rolling Stones, whose amplifiers were seized at the Canada-U.S. border.The resilient, rich guitar and bass sound familiar to anyone who has heard “Get Ya” was created using VT40s and VT22s, and remained the sound of the Stones until the late 1970s.The Ampeg SVT continued to be the standard bass amp for rock and roll.Leading stoner rock guitarist Josh chose the SVT for his gigs in Palm Desert, California. The SVT was named after the place, and its stunning guitar sound became known as the Desert Sound.The Catalinbread SFT is an overdrive inspired by the great SVT. It has that unique “undistorted” yet “not clean” sound that only the best tube amps have. It is the sound that only the best tube amps have. It is raw, resilient, and highly responsive. It was not easy to reproduce this sound with a pedal.SFT combines both.The SFT works perfectly on the low E string, and the SFT is a great pedal to use with a high output amp.The SFT reproduces the response of a cranked up high output amp without having to crank up the volume. The SFT can be used just like a preamp and works like an amp when combined with other fuzz, boost, or overdrive.When you first get to know the SFT, please use the SFT with a clean amp to get to know the characteristics of the SFT. STONES/STONER modeThe STONES/STONER switch on the SFT allows you to completely reconfigure the SFT to create a completely different sound. It is like Jekyll and Hyde, transforming the SFT into a leopard.STONES mode produces a refined, classic rock ‘n’ roll tone, while STONER mode produces a raw tone that sounds like the roar of an unleashed beast.Choose STONES mode if you need the superb tone of a high-output tube amp and use it as a preamp, or choose STONER mode for a fuzz-like high-gain drive tone. ControlsTREBLE/BASS knob.These two knobs equalize the tone. Each is flat at the 12 o’clock position, cut below 12 o’clock, and boosted above 12 o’clock. Each frequency is tuned to match the characteristics of the SFT.Setting the TREBLE/BASS knob to 12 o’clock produces a big-bodied tone with a slight emphasis on the original Ampeg’s low midrange. If you want to emphasize the midrange, start by setting the Bass knob at 9 o’clock and the Treble knob at 12 o’clock. Setting the TREBLE control at around 12:00 to 1.5 o’clock will emphasize the mids without making the highs too strong. The midrange can also be pushed by increasing the GAIN control.Conversely, if you want to suppress the midrange, set the TREBLE and BASS knobs higher. This is especially effective when GAIN is low. The range of the BASS knobWhen the BASS knob is set low, the high pass is controlled around 200 Hz. Turning up the BASS control will boost the 200Hz range. Turning the BASS control all the way up gives a strong boost to the low end. This setting is especially good for creating a bad low end in the STONER mode.-TREBLE knob range.Turning the TREBLE knob down from the 12 o’clock position gives a low-pass control around 1000 Hz. Typically, the TREBLE knob is turned down below 12 o’clock when the gain is set low, when creating “woolly” fuzz in STONER mode, or when used with a bass guitar.When the TREBLE knob is turned up, the upper mids are emphasized from 12 to 2 o’clock, and the treble becomes stronger after that. When in STONER mode on a guitar, try using 12 to 2 o’clock as the basic setting.GAIN knob (STONES mode)In STONES mode, the range of the GAIN knob is adjusted to be equivalent to the volume control on a large 1-volt amplifier. From minimum to around 10 o’clock, the tone is clean and bright with high response; from 10 to 12 o’clock, the tone is between distorted and clean, sensitive with adjustable drive by picking; from 12 to 2 o’clock, it is the overdrive that many tube amps make. The sweet spot is the overdrive sweet spot that many tube amps produce, and further up is a crunchy to saturated sound.Just like a real tube amp, the SFT responds to the guitar to which it is connected. Low-powered guitars will produce a clean tone with little distortion relative to the GAIN setting, while high-powered guitars will produce a distorted tone.Like a real tube amp, the SFT also responds well to the volume setting of the guitar.Furthermore, like a 1-Vol amp, the TREBLE/BASS control can be changed to match the GAIN setting to find the tone you prefer in more detail.The SFT is a clean, low-gain amp with a low gain knob and a VOLUME knob.The SFT is set to produce a high volume output even at clean and low gain settings; even with the GAIN control set low, you can use it like a clean boost by boosting the output with the VOLUME knob. On the other hand, be careful not to set the VOLUME knob too high in STONER mode with GAIN turned up.STONER modeIn STONER mode, each control knob operates basically the same as in STONES mode, but the GAIN, TREBLE, and BASS knobs should be set lower than in STONES mode for sound creation.Also, in STONER mode, the higher the control is set, the more extreme the sound and the louder the noise. If you want to create a tight distortion sound in STONES mode, start by setting the TREBLE/BASS and GAIN knobs low.
