Great Britain was no exception – in 1945, the chief designer of GAL (General Aircraft Ltd) Crocombe set before his subordinates the task of creating a Tactical transport ship to deliver people and equipment to the battlefield. During 1945, representatives of the Ministry of Aviation and the GAL firm approved the final specification, negotiating the tactical and technical data of the new aircraft. The project, which received the designation GAL 60, was based on the version with four Bristol Hercules engines with cargo compartment doors in the rear and a folding internal ramp. The aircraft’s design was all-metal with a double-deck fuselage. The cockpit (two pilots, navigator and radio operator) was located above the cargo compartment from above. On the first flight on June 20, 1950, Harold Wood lifted the car. The giant’s data was impressive – the maximum take-off weight reached 47640 kg, of which 16 tons were payload, fuel and oil. Due to the non-retractable landing gear, the speed of the aircraft turned out to be small – 350 km / h at an altitude of 1220 m.In the course of finalizing the prototype, the structure was reinforced, the rear flaps were changed to eject equipment in the air and the installation of additional fuel tanks, which led to an increase in the maximum take-off weight up to 57t. and, accordingly, required the installation of more powerful engines. The choice was made for two-row Bristol “Centaurus” air-cooled, with a takeoff power of 2850 hp. The overall dimensions of the aircraft remained almost unchanged, only a bogie of four smaller diameters was placed on the main landing gear instead of one wheel. The first two production Beverlys took off for the first time in March 1955. From March of the following year, the transport aircraft officially began to enter service with the Royal Air Force. When transporting armed soldiers, 58 people were housed in the cargo compartment, and 36 in the tail boom. If it was required to land a trooper, then 70 parachutists climbed aboard the Beverly (30 took places in the tail boom). For the serial Beverly, the maximum cargo transported was 22680 kg. In this case, the range was only 160 km. And with a load of 13 tons, the plane could already fly 2,424 km. The first (in 1956) received new aircraft from the 47th squadron, based in Abingdon. It is symbolic that the unit was organized in 1916. at the airfield in Beverly, and after 40 years retrained for the plane with the same name. The second part of the RAF to receive the Beverly was 57 Squadron, stationed along with the aircraft of 47 Squadron at the same base in Abingdon. Squadron crews very quickly got involved in aerial work, transporting cargo almost all over the world. In 1957, the Beverly Squadron No. 30 joined the British Air Force in the Middle East, and its crews flew to the capital of Kenya. Aden (Yemen) became the main base for the transport workers of the 84th squadron, and the Beverlys of the 46th squadron climbed the farthest, flying in Singapore. While serving in the RAF, Beverly has earned a reputation as a reliable and unpretentious aircraft capable of landing on a limited-size unpaved airfield. The last production Beverly was rolled out of the gates of the Brow workshop in May 1956. In 1963, the Beverly was officially decommissioned, and the crews of the transport squadrons began to retrain to modern Lockheed Hercules. The first serial “Beverly” has survived to this day, on which various tests were carried out until the end of 1972. This aircraft remained the only survivor of all 49 built vehicles (47 serial plus two prototypes), becoming an exhibit at the Museum of Military Transport in the city that bears his name – Beverly.
