Please come back often, as we are always buying more goodies to list on ebay. This listing is for an absolutely gorgeous, ladies vintage, midcentury, DuBois watch. The words on this watch are written in French. The bottom of the dial reads “17 Rubis” which means it has 17 jewels and at the base of the dial it reads Locle Suisse, which I think refers to where the watch was made in Switzerland. The inside of the case back reads “Fond Acier Inoxydable” which means the watch has a stainless steal case back. The outside of the case back has the serial # 3317. I can find no marking saying what the watch case is, however, I’ve had a lot of experience identifying gold filled jewelry and watches. There is an obvious thickness to the gold outer shell that shows in the few places it is worn (next to the crown and on the lugs) and based on this, the watch looks to be gold filled or rolled gold plate. They are essentially the same thing, with gold filled being slightly thicker. The age of the watch is hard to narrow to an exact year. Based on style and signs of age, I’d date the watch as a midcentury piece. It’s design fits with other midcentury watches by DuBois. The inside of the case has a servicing date from 1975, so I know it’s at least that old, but I feel pretty confident that it’s older, probably 1960s, maybe even earlier. Apparently, DuBois is the oldest Swiss watchmaking company, dating from 1785. I think they are still around. They are known for making high end watches, so this watch is quite special. The watch has a round case that measures 17 mm in diameter. The lug distance is 7 mm. The watch looks beautiful but does show some signs of age and wear. As previously mentioned, there is a small degree of wear to the outer gold shell of the case. This is in places that come into contact with other surfaces. There is some wear to the case on the upper left side of the crown (see photos). There is also some wear to the gold shell on the upper inner, corner edges of the lugs, but this wear doesn’t extend to the base metal. On the inner side of the lugs, where the spring bar attaches, there is wear down to the base metal (see photos). This is to be expected as this is where the band comes into contact with the lugs and rubs on a daily basis. Of course, this part is completely covered when the band is attached and not visible to anyone. Other than that, apart from some mild abrasions or dings, the case looks great and is still very much gold in appearance. The watch dial is gold in color, as are the number markers and hands. The markers and hands are a slightly darker shade and shinier, so they stand out against the dial for telling time. The dial looks lovely, with some signs of age in terms of a few specks here and there and some slight variation/uneveness in color. The areas around the numbers are slightly darker and some areas are ever so slightly lighter here and there. This is something that just happens with age and exposure to light. The watch crystal also shows some signs of age and wear. The crystal is still clear to view the time through, but its surface has some abrasions and scuff marks. Again, this is just something that happens with age and wear. This watch is at least 50 years old, but probably closer to 65 give or take a few. Given its age, and the fact that it is a vintage pre owned item, a degree of age and wear is expected. The watch’s main issue is the detached band on one end. The band itself is a 10K gold filled, one-piece-expandable, vintage band that is in good condition, both functionally and in appearance. The spring bar that fits into the little notches on the inside of the lugs and holds the band in place is missing on one side and needs a replacement. The lugs are drilled all the way through and still sturdy, and the tunnel on the band that the rod fits through is solid, so reattaching the band should be as easy as inserting a new rod. The band appears to have had very little wear. It may be a tad faded but I see no base metal showing through. I do, however, have new-old-stock replacement bands if the buyer would like one included. I don’t know how to attach bands, so the buyer will need to see to this. This watch is manual winding and running at the time of writing this listing. It winds easily and ticks steadily, but the watch’s time keeping accuracy has not been tested. I’m including a video of the watch running. There isn’t a second hand on this watch to show it running, so I videoed the movement. I know nothing of this watch’s history or when it was last serviced and can make no guarantees about its future working condition. As a vintage, mechanical timepiece, some form of maintenance/repair should be anticipated, and even expected, and factored into the cost of owning such a watch. As with all aged mechanics, there is always a risk regarding its working condition. You are buying this watch AS IS. After purchase, I will check it to be sure it still works before it is packaged for shipping, and I will take a second video at this time as proof. If it has stopped working, I will notify the buyer and the buyer may choose to either cancel the sell or renegotiate the price at this time. Once the watch leaves my possession at the post office, the sell is final with no returns. I have a number of ladies designer vintage watches for sell and soon to be listed. Collectors of gentlemen’s watches might consider a lady’s timepiece for their women in their lives this Christmas. Just a thought! Pictures are to be considered as part of the description.
