Paris : Bance Aine, … Vol I pp: [iv], 36, [1], 127 pl; Vol II pp: [iv], 24, [1], 128 pl. Fascinating and scarce two volume set showing architectural drawings of the parts of constructions composed of wood, such as the frameworks for domes, attics, ceilings, floors, stairways, etc; also drawings for bridge and canal construction, machiner, and for constructions in garden and parks. This is the third and expanded new edition with an additional forty plates by [Francois] Thiollet. 255 plates in total inc. frontis in vol I. Plates engraved by Boulay, Boully, Chamau, Daubanton, Heluis and Van Maelle after Krafft, some are spread over two pages and are counted as two plates; two plates are bound upside-down: pl 45 in Vol I and pl 104 in vol II. Both volumes have vignette title-pages and engraved dedication page by Molé. Elephant folio (534mm X 356mm) in recent re-joint in morocco on contemporary quarter sheep with brown pulled-paste pattern boards, head and tail bands, gilt spine lettering and gilt horizontal bands. Condition Both bindings are very sturdy with the re-jointing sympathetically and very well excecuted – no wear to the spine-ends or or hinges and much of the original gilt is present. Edges are rubbed and the fore-corners rubbed and gently bumped, a small number of surface peel strips to boards. In both volumes, leaves and plates are very clear and generally show pale to light foxing towards edges. In vol I, a small number of leaves with patches of foxing to upper margin areas; lower corner crease to the two front matter leaves including title-page and to front facing end-paper, which also has extensive foxing; and an upper corner closed margin tear to pl 115. In vol II: light scattered foxing to title-page, light crease across lower margin areas of p19-21, dedication leaf with closed tear and without loss towards the bottom margin, lower corner margin crease to plates 101, 102, 103, & 104 – 104 also bound upside-down – and pale spot to non-print detail of final four plates.
