ANIMALS, DOG AND FARMER DINNER PLATE SET. TRADEMARK ON BACK AS FOLLOWS (MEMORY LANE 1965 – ROYAL IRONSTONE, UNDER GLAZE- MADE IN U.S.A. This Beautiful early Royal China, Sebring, Ohio Dish set of 2 MEMORY LANE 1965 DINNER PLATES measures 10 Inches in width. On the bottom of the dish set is the trademark of Royal China, Sebring, Ohio for this set. In 1936, Royal China became the first dinnerware company to affix the label of the National Brotherhood of Operative Potters Union to tableware manufactured in the United States. This is not on the trademark of these plates. All dishes are of the same design, same trademarks on all dishes. Royal China introduced this Pattern in 1964 using some of the Decals from the Currier and Ives and other less popular lines they had produced up until that point. The biggest difference from some of the earlier Lines and this one was it produced using just a few colors – the main one being a Red color – or actually more commonly today called “Pink”. Like most other Royal China products this pattern was sold direct to a few limited retail outlets, but mostly it was sold to Grocery and Discount Chains to be given away or sold as premiums. The Memory Lane Pattern was very short lived and abruptly discontinued after just a few short years when the company was purchased by Jeannette in late 1969. Memory Lane, although not as popular and collectible today as the Currier & Ives Patterns, it is still very much sought out although it is more of a challenge to find quality pieces because of the limited production run. This information on Memory Lane came from an article on the internet Please view photos for condition. Before baking and glazing the Trademark was placed on the dishes. Also noted on the back on each plate on the right and left side is a small spot which sometimes is discolored which appears to have been a device placed to hold the plates when possibly glazing. These spots are the same on all 2 dishes, some spots more visible. This wonderful early 1960’s period Royal China, Sebring, Ohio dish set of 2 are without chips or cracks. Crazing is present on 1 of the dinner plates. I have defined crazing below which is very common on early china dishes. The Royal China plates appear to most likely never been used, if used very carefully and lightly considering its age in the 1960’s period as trademark shows. When using a magnifying glass a very few, very light utensil marks are present on the dishes. In appearance they are excellent vintage Dinner Plates Below I have added information on the Royal China, Sebring, Ohio Co. Photographs and the history of Crazing on pottery as noted in my ad which is present on 1 dish. As photos show I would consider these Royal China (MEMORY LANE 1965) Dishes to be in excellent condition. Photos have been taken in different lighting situations hopefully to bring out the best of this wonderful set of Royal China dishes. Please keep in mind that this dish set is close to 60 years old and may exhibit minor ware as I have tried to define above. Please view photos for condition. CRAZING: Crazing is the fine crackling one often sees on many glazed pottery pieces and on certain types of antique porcelain. Crazing is in the glaze and is not detectable when one rubs his or her fingernail over the crazing. Art pottery crazing occurs during pottery production when the clay body and glaze cool at different rates. Crazing is a very common condition with virtually all glazed art pottery. Normal crazing or crackling that can not be seen at a few feet does not typically affect the value of most very high quality art pottery pieces. This information came from an article by Harry Rinkler titled “Dating China Heirlooms” ROYAL CHINA, SEBRING, OHIO- HISTORY OF THE ROYAL CHINA CO.: The Royal China Company was formerly The Oliver China Company, then the E. H. Sebring China Company. It was located on South 15th Street in Sebring, Ohio. The original founders were Beatrice L. Miller, William H. Habenstreit and John Bert Briggs. Miss Miller and Mr. Habenstreit had been employed at National Publicity Bureau as ‘middlemen’ buying dinnerware from the potteries for resale as advertising premiums for Quaker Oats and Proctor and Gamble in Omaha, Nebraska. The three began the company with $500, six months free rent and employees working without pay. Miss Miller went to the bank with the proposal to purchase the building, but was turned away, as a woman in manufacturing was practically unheard of at that time. Mr. Habenstreit went to the same bank with the same proposal and had a warm reception. They hired John ‘Bert’ Briggs who had a knowledge of pottery manufacture and lived in Sebring where he worked as a potter. They offered employment to anyone who was willing to work without pay until their pottery got on its feet. As most of the potters in Sebring were out of work anyway, they had nothing to loose. Six months later, they had 125 people on their payroll. During the first year of operation, Royal China produced 7,800,000 pieces of pottery. Even though it was the Depression, the company had replaced all of the old kilns with more modern equipment in four years. In 1943-44, the plant was converted to produce china and porcelain for the U.S. Government. In 1948, Kennith Doyle, a former printer, invented an under glaze stamping machine that revolutionized the pottery industry. They were, after many years of research, able to apply under-glaze colors in intricate decorations, automatically and directly onto the unglazed ware rather than on paper transfers. It was put to use in 1948 on the centuries old Blue Willow Pattern. Royal China became the world’s largest manufacturer in Willow Ware. Royalton was the trade name for their plastic dinnerware line. The company purchased the George Pottery in 1962 and French-Saxon China Company in 1964. By 1965, Royal was the largest in the U.S., among union plants, and had $6,000,000 in sales. Miller retired in 1969 and sold the plant to the Jeannette Glass Co., of Pennsylvania. On February 15, 1970, a fire completely destroyed the buildings. Rebuilt, and at its peak in the 1970’s, it employed over 700 people, with the most modern equipment and buildings available. They had sales of around $16 million and had two different lines with a total of 81 semi-vitreous dinnerware patterns. They were able to produce 30,000,000 pieces, making it the largest dinnerware plant in Sebring, as well as the third largest in the United States. Jeannette Glass/Royal was purchased by Coca Cola Bottling Co, and then was sold to an investors group from Boston, The J Corporation. Operations ceased in 1986. The Nordic Capital Corporation purchased the company in April 1984, then closed in March of 1986. Finally, Bank One auctioned off the contents of the pottery in 1986.
