This is a New 1990s Serratelli BIG Cattleman, SilverBelly, 30X Beaver cowboy hat. That special 3 piece buckle set is really something that stands out! This was found in that older Resistol hat box. The size states 7-3/8 and this measures to a PERFECT 7-3/8. So when this was bought initially there were 2 different near exact hats. One had a regular 3 piece buckle set and there was this second more expensive 3 piece buckle set. My son says that this upgrade has a Serling Silver Buckle with a Gold insert where the actual pin goes into, see pictures. The Blue Gem stone in the center just makes this stand out! It’s hard to describe exactly and the close-up picture better shows what we are struggling to describe. This original cost over $520 in total. The less expensive one was still $470, same 30X Beaver, no fancy buckle set though. After an exhaustive search looking for this same hat at the Serratelli website it appears they currently only sell the standard 3 piece buckle set? Please, if you can find details on this buckle set or the materials specifics please contact us. When my son bought this, those were the specifics as the salesman told him. He never actually took it to get the material or gem stone tested. But you can see there is NO a wear at all to this or tarnishing. If this was fake it should have bit of tarnishing after all there years. Correct? So there is disagreement on the color. Dad says taupe but I think it’s more of a tan color! All those pictures making it look SilverBelly is NOT correct! Picture number 3 best reflects the actual color of this hat and that is the color you are buying! So far 3 of dad’s collectors are writing us saying this is the newer Taupe color? As compared to Dad’s collection of pre-1960s Taupe color. It’s a few shades darker than those. What do you think? We filled the picture gallery so you can see every detail! We hid nothing! This is near Pristine! We really can’t find a thing wrong with this Great hat! This hat does NOT belong to dad, this one of my son’s hats. He says it may have been worn once or twice and stored away in that Resistol hat box and hasn’t seen the light of day for many years. We have been to hat shop that still sell the Stetson 30X Beaver hats, they did not sell the Serratelli 30X Beaver. There is a difference between the older and newer ones. We actually compared this older Serratelli to the new Stetson 30X Beaver and these new Stetsons feel very very stiff. They just aren’t as pliable as the older ones. As we tried to indent and form the brim just a little to compare the flexibility there is a significant difference. We had no older Stetson 30X Beaver to compare it to but maybe over the years it’s changed? The thing is when dad and I talked about the difference he thought the the new Stetson was made from a stiff substrate (like plastic) and then dipped into the beaver that sticks to the substrate and we know that NOT how they make hats! It just how it felt to dad. I did agree that the newer one are just extremely stiff compared to the older ones. This is the largest hat box that Resistol manufactured! This will require a LARGE shipping box! So it’s going to cost more to ship but it’s well worth the investment! This is an OUTSTANDING hat and that wide brim (it’s a fraction over 4 inches) and shaping is nearly perfect. After taking pictures outside we did see that it needs a slight steaming to sharpen up the shape. It’s a very slight adjustment and you’ll actually never even notice the difference. Just a bit on the back brim, to flatten it a fraction more. Sometimes what looks perfect inside the home looks a bit out of place outside. And Dad is EXTREMELY particular when it comes to details! Dad says that it may looks even better with a more pronounced shovel style brim. You may want to write to us before buying the hat to ask if he will reshape the brim? It’s easy enough to do this after it’s bought. Easily steamed into different style brim shapes.This is an older, not quite vintage, original Serratelli 30X Beaver! It is one of the first ones that they started selling! Serratelli is actually a very old hat company (started in 1878) that initially sold hat blanks to companies so they could make the finished hats. Serratelli has been making hats now for many many years! NOT OWNED BY HATCO! HATCO bought out many of the hat manufacturers! Including Stetson, Resistol and so many more! These old original companies just aren’t what they used to be. This company is NOT an owned by HATCO, one of the few big hat companies that have NOT been bought out by HATCO! So Serratelli still makes their own hats! Not dictated by HATCO and their quality continues to remain outstanding! My grandson has done of bit of research and found this:“ Dean Serratelli is the fourth generation to own Serratelli and the great, great grandson of our founder, Pio Serratelli. Dean first learned the hat business as a child, working the factory floor with his father and uncle. In 1997, Dean expanded into retail and launched the Serratelli Hat Company as it is known today. His wife, Christina Serratelli, joined him in 2006 to work on the operations, focusing on the back office.” NOTE: the hat box is included in this sale. The Resistol hat box is still in very good condition! Not pristine but well worthy of storing and displaying! This has its original hat holding insert set, along with the paper that goes over the crown, down to the brim to keep dust and shaping, dad added that along with the heavier cardboard type insert into the underside to keep the interior clean. This measures to a perfect 7-3/8 at 23-1/8 inches, see picture. We use the Tilley hat size chart. This chart is still in use today.
