This beautiful ‘Gondolo’ pocket watch belonged to PASQUAL PAPINI as they were made for the person who ordered it and his name is prominently displayed on the dial where Patek Philippe is usually printed. The enamel dial has Roman hours and Arabic minute numerals with a smaller second hand dial. The dial is in pristine unmarked condition. Case No 234xxx, Movement No.161xxx, Circa 1910-1914. Jeweled Swiss lever movement with steel chronograph work, bi-metallic balance, white regulator dial with black Roman numerals, black outer minute track with Arabic five minute markers, gold hands and subsidiary dials at 6 for running seconds, polished round hinged case with cuvette engraved ‘Patek Philippe & Cie, Geneve’ and on the outer RELOJOARIA GONDOLO, Gondolo Laboriau, Rio de Janeiro. Bridges, grained, gilded, wolf-toothed elevator wheels. Balance, blued balance coil, eccentric fine adjustment; signed “PATEK PHILIPPE & Cie. Genève”. Case, dial and movement signed Diameter without crown approx. 56 mm. Height approx. 16 mm. Weight 129 gr. There is a wonderful history to the Gondolo watches: In 1902, Gondolo & Labouriau commissioned a Patek Philippe pocket watch with exclusive technical specifications – in this case, a gold gear train – giving rise to the famous Chronometro Gondolo family of pocket watches. The first Chronometro Gondolo wristwatches appeared in 1910 and came in square, rectangular and tonneau-shaped cases reflecting the spirit of the age. In addition, the wristwatches were commissioned in larger-sized cases – up to 48mm in diameter – to reflect the Brazilian watch aficionado’s taste for larger timepieces that would get them noticed. Capitalizing on the exclusivity factor of having Switzerland’s most renowned watchmaker make models especially for Gondolo & Labouriau, the jewelers came up with a clever marketing plan and created a watch-collecting club known as the Gondolo Gang. A powerful status symbol among Brazilian’s upper class, the 180 members were invited to participate in the Plano do Club Patek Philippe System, a pay-by-installment plan allowing the 790 Swiss Francs price tag of a Chronometro Gondolo watch to be deferred over 79 weeks. In addition to this attractive incentive, the jewelers organized 79 weekly lotteries for its members, awarding the winning number the Patek watch and thus cancelling any future payments. To animate the weekly lotteries of the Gondolo Gang, members were invited to picnics, parties and even a special piece of music known as the Patek Waltz composed by F. Santini was played at events. This pocket watch is extremely well persevered and in wonderful condition.Patek Philippe began production of this iconic model ‘Chronometro Gondolo’ in 1872 and sold it through Patek Philippe?s exclusive agent in Brazil: Gondolo & Labouriau. The case back features the engraving: “Fabricado Expressamente para Gondolo & Labouriou Relojoeiros Rio De Janeiro” translating to “Expressly manufactured for Gondolo & Labouriau, watchmakers, Rio De Janeiro”.
