VINTAGE LYNX Parallax MEN’S Golf SINGLE BECU 9 Iron Graphite Shaft.This is a rare Lynx Parallax BeCu iron, very soft feel.About The ManufacturerGolfsmith purchased Lynx Golf in 1998. Founded in 1967, Golfsmith began offering club maker training programs to teach the skills of club repair and clubmaking. Carl and Frank Paul opened up a 6,000 sq. ft. showroom in Austin, TX in 1973. Shortly thereafter, in 1975, the Pauls created The Golfsmith Store accessory catalog. Golfsmith established the GCA (Golf Clubmakers Association) which is an organization who’s mission is to serve and support clubmakers worldwide. In 1992, Golfsmith moved into a 40 acre campus that houses corporate offices, a 30,000 ft. super-store, a practice facility, over 200,000 sq. ft of shipping facilities. The Harvey Penick Golf Academy was created by legendary teacher Harvey Penick, author of The Little Red Book, in conjunction with Golfsmith. The Harvey Penick Golf Academy is located in Austin, TX and has instructed over 17,000 golfers. Golfsmith operates over 40 retail stores nationwide, including “superstores” in Houston, Dallas, and Denver. Golfsmith has acquired Lynx Golf, Inc., Snake Eyes Golf Club Inc., and Black Rock Corp, maker of the Killer Bee golf clubs.Parallax and Black Cat are synonymous with Lynx and both were the work of designer David Boone. The Parallax came first, in 1991.It was a cast cavity-back, inspired by the two most successful irons of the day, the Tommy Armour 845s and the PING Eye 2.Boone sent the first Parallax set to Fred Couples at the end of 1991. Couples’ contract with Tommy Armour was ending and he put them in play at the Johnnie Walker World Championship. He won.He officially joined the Lynx staff in January of ’92 and proceeded to win three more times, including the 1992 Masters. Couples used an old MacGregor persimmon driver to win the Masters but, by the end of the year, he put into play the club that spawned perhaps the greatest golf commercial ever, the Lynx Boom Boom driver.Ernie Els and Michelle McGann soon joined the Lynx staff. Els won the ’94 U.S. Open and set a single-season earnings record with Parallax. McGann gamed Parallax for all seven of her LGPA wins. By 1995 the larger, more forgiving Black Cat joined the lineup. Review: “Played these clubs when Fred Couples played them about 22 years ago. Quit playing for 17 years started back playing 11/2 years ago. Tried Callaway, TM, Ping and these were the only ones I could get the distance I had lost. I can hit 6-w very high and long irons medium height but long. Clubs give good feedback on off-center hits. They look like blades at address. Fat shots do get good distance. Pro’s: nice lines at address. When hit solid, very high and long shots. Con’s: Off center hits will cost distance and some vibration of clubs. Would not recommend for higher handicaps.” “I played golf for four years in high school and then quit playing for six years and picked it up again. I’ve been playing for 2 years now since I started again and my game has improved by at least 10 strokes. I think I never forgot the fundamentals I learned when I was younger, and don’t make many of the mental mistakes I used to make. I’m a 12 handicap. Lynx Parallax is the first set of clubs I ever owned. I have the cavity back model that are pretty good to hit. Small, narrow top line, firm steel shaft, very little offset in the short irons, but offset increases in as you move up in the set. You do have to hit it close to center for distance but it feels so great when you do. Any mis-hit will result in a hook or slice and/or loss of distance. But the club gives you incredible feed back. You really know when you left the club head open or slowed in your downswing. When you hit the ball dead center the club feels almost like hitting thin air, a feeling you want to store in your muscle memory. My opinion: I really love these clubs. This is a great club to learn with.” This used Men’s club is playable and in good condition. Grooves are in good condition. Some scratches on the sole and small dings from play on the lead edge.Face has some visible wear, but will be very playable for many years.
