Iconic British Royal Navy ‘Monty’ DUFFEL COAT with original issue Tag, Size 1 (“Extra Large”). This extremely heavy hooded wool DUFFEL COAT was favored by the British 8th Army’s L.R.D.G. (Long Range Desert Group) in the North African campaign, South of The Great Sand Sea, the S.A.S. (Special Air Service), as well as officers, sailors, submariners of the Royal Navy on the bridges and decks of His Majesty’s ships of war…the destroyers serving convoy duty in the bitterly contested Battle of the Atlantic. Popularized by Sir Bernard Law Montgomery, this is often referred to as the “Monty coat.” This is a timeless utility garment, the design of which still looks smart in an urban setting over a suit, or for “casual wear” on a chilly fall or bone-chilling winter weekend outing. But more than that it’s a “piece of British history.” This coat appeared in numerous scenes in the 2017 film, DUNKIRK ***** Description and Particulars of Condition: + Undated, but WWII-era design and quality. Timeless! + Superb condition!+ Deep Patch Pockets!+ Generous attached Hood, large enough to wear over a Visor Cap or a Helmet.+ Very generous cut through the body and sleeves, large enough to wear over a full uniform coat. + This fabric is as dense and thick as that of the saddle blanket we use on our horses. It is virtually windproof, waterproof, weatherproof…maybe bulletproof! It is HEAVY on the shoulders! + ZERO moth holes, bites, majors stains, fraying missing buttons, rope toggles, etc.. The only blemish I can spot is a spot beneath the left front Patch Pocket seam which I have left as I found them decades ago. This is a very handsome coat in very handsome condition. + The top corners of the two large Patch Pockets are reinforced on the inside with large patches of matching ‘drab'(British tan/camel) heavy cotton twill.+ The same cotton twill reinforcement patches secure the back of the four Toggles.+ Each lap felled seam is securely stitched. The inside edges of the heavy wool are cut close and left ‘raw’ — all very neatly and expertly done! + The finish on the four lacquered maple Toggles is PERFECT.+ ZERO fraying to the four securely sewn Rope Loops.+ The wide fabric ‘Hanging Tape’ in the interior at the base of the Hood is still securely attached+ The interior is CLEAN and free of “pilling.”+ The fabric Adjustment Tape that tightens the the large ‘bucket’ Hood can be adjusted on both sides for three different circumferences, depending on which of the ivory to pairs of ivory Buttons are used.+ Dimensions (approximate): Pit to Pit = 27″Length (from the base of the Hood, center rear, to the Hem = 40″Sleeve (from the top of the Shoulder Seam to the Cuff = 25” + Note: This garment is a “SIZE 1” which it interpret to mean an Extra Large. It is a “human” size! I am 6′ 4″, and 195 lbs. and it fits me fine. But the reproduction, according to Buzz Rickson, is ‘sized’ quite differently from the WWII coats. They state, about their reproduction, “This modified tailored cut is a slimmer fit in the chest and armhole area as opposed to the wide cut found on any of the other vintage original specifications for a more modern casual look and fashion purpose.” The same limitations of ‘cut’ and ‘size’ would be true of any of the current, “modern” iterations of this British camel duffel coat. And finding one is THIS “extra large” size is nearly impossible, given the average stature of sailors, officers, soldiers during WWII.+ NOTE: Any overage is postage will be immediately refunded. *****History of the coat, from the DUFFLECOATSHOP: The Duffle Coat as well as many other fashionable pieces of clothing nowadays, came from military clothes. Its excellent qualities probably helped to win a lot of battles — this amazing coat warmed, protected from whims of severe weather and united a great number of soldiers. On land and at sea Originally the duffle coat was created for English military mariners. Each detail of the coat was designed for practical use in severe conditions of naval service. For example, few large buttons and loops were made to button and unbutton the coat easily with gloves on — so, your hands didn’t get cold. The Royal Navy in Duffle Coats During The Second World War The voluminous hood, which looks like a bucket, was worn over a peak-cap causing no difficulties. A seaman could put almost all his possessions in the pockets: a card, a tobacco-pipe, binoculars or a spyglass, a compass — everything they wished. And the most important thing is fabric. Dense and warm wool duffle could keep warmth in the deepest frosts, and at the same time was able to resist to any craft of weather: gale, heavy rain with hail and snowfall. War is war, and the weather conditions are not taken into consideration there. Therefore, all the useful characteristics of a duffle coat were useful not only to mariners, but also to infantry, and soon practically all the English soldiers walked in identical coats. United in Spirit Besides practical reasons, duffle coats helped to unite spirit of the army of Great Britain. To be more exact, it was done by the one and the only duffle coat did it — the coat of the General Montgomery. This simple attire led thousands of people — both those who were in direct submission, and those who simply admired this person The seamen tenderly called the general Monty. He was a real military genius — and all ingenious, as we know, is simple. Despite the high rank, Montgomery looked like an ordinary English soldier and he wore the same duffle coat. And, as you can notice, this didn’t prevent the general from winning one victory after another for the sake of Great Britain, or perhaps even helped him. It isn’t surprising that Monty was popular among the soldiers. Everybody saw that this great man doesn’t shrink from what the government provides for ordinary fighters. By doing this he became closer to each of them. Soldiers and officers followed, copied, admired and adored Montgomery, — and it united them to fight for the victory. And after all, a certain role was played by the duffle coat, too. What an amazing coat indeed! ***** Those original duffle coats worn by British seamen were made of a special woolen fabric, duffle, which gave the name to the coat. The fabric was created in the Belgian town of Duffel and, owing to its quality, was noticed by tailors. Duffle was wind- and waterproof and kept warm in the most severe frosts. The only disadvantage of the fabric was its weight as warmth was provided at the expense of density and thickness of the cloth. A coat made of this fabric was quite heavy. However dashing soldiers didn’t mind. The main thing was that it protected them from the cold. However, a modern person, wearing the bygone duffle coat, would notice that it wasn’t easy to wear such a burden.Timeline: 1860 The first samples of outerwear for sailors are received. Ideal Clothing Company releases the first batch of duffle coats. 1890 Expedition to the Antarctic is the first recorded use of duffle coats by sailors as a uniform. 1915 A duffle coat is a coat of medium length with an asymmetrical fastening and big wooden buttons. They are widely popular among the Navy officers. Many of them exchange their coats for less formal duffle coats. 1930 “Duffle” becomes a common name. It takes its name from the Belgian town of Duffel, where the fabric for the first duffle coats was produced. 1942 Duffle coats are used on small boats. The material is mainly produced in Yorkshire. Submarines are supplied with special duffle coats, as common coats were uncomfortable in cramped conditions. 1945 A young officer Bernard Law Montgomery offered to take the sailors’ idea and to provide military land forces with clothes that could be worn both by soldiers and officers.
